Polaroids from New Mexico

I spent a week in New Mexico with Lisa and her family in March. While I was there, I took nearly 100 polaroids, using an automatic Polaroid 600 and a “manual” Polaroid Land 100 camera.

I finally uploaded my best photos to Flickr. Here’s a slideshow of my New Mexico polaroids.

In Kentucky for Rootscamp

Tonight I flew into Louisville, Kentucky to participate in the Rootscamp KY unconference tomorrow. This is my first time in the Bluegrass state, as well as my first unconference. I plan on leading a session on Elaine Chao, which is convenient, as the event is taking place in the Elaine Chao Auditorium of the University of Louisville. That auditorium, of course, came from a $14.8 million dollar earmark by husband Sen. Mitch McConnell. Adorable.

Much better than cell phones

Next week Jet Blue begins testing in-flight email and instant messaging access, with other airlines rolling out Internet access of varying degrees of similarity soon after. An analyst explains what this means for the future:

“I think 2008 is the year when we will finally start to see in-flight Internet access become available,” said Henry Harteveldt, an analyst with Forrester Research, “but I suspect the rollout domestically will take place in a very measured way.” “In a few years time,” he added, “if you get on a flight that doesn’t have Internet access, it will be like walking into a hotel room that doesn’t have TV.”

Bush: Thanksgiving "a season of dread"

I missed this at the end of last week, but Bush really knows how to put everyone in the holiday spirits.

Saying that Thanksgiving was becoming “a season of dread for too many Americans,” Bush said his administration would take immediate steps to boost airport capacity and alleviate East Coast congestion, which administration officials described as a “choke point” that affects air travel all the way tothe West Coast.

Is anything for this guy not dreadful or fearful or a sign of impending doom? Jeebus.

Forget the Chinatown bus

I took a short trip to New York City on Friday, riding the Amtrak on the way up and taking a bus on the way down. In previous excursions to The Center of the Universe, I’d taken one of several flavors of Chinatown bus companies. One time, within 3 seconds of pulling away in New York, the bus hit the side of a passing car, delaying us an hour and a half.

But on Friday evening I took a bus from DC2NY.com, and it was the best bus experience I’ve had. The bus was new and clean, the driver was friendly, my fellow riders were courteous and quiet, and best of all, the wireless internet worked, albeit slowly. All for $22. Towards the end of the trip, the driver held a vote to see if we should put on a movie. The vast majority voted for a movie, but he did not tell us what he was going to put in the DVD player. It ended up being Homeward Bound, one of my favorite movies from when I was a kid. It was fun to watch such a classic as we wound up our trip to the District.

We arrived in DC only half an hour late, which was decent considering the weather and traffic. Check them out the next time you’re going up north.

Tomorrow morning I fly to Boston to move my brother out of his fifth-floor walk-up apartment. I don’t expect to post here until after Labor Day. I can’t remember the last time I traveled this much in a month. Chicago, New York City, and now Boston—I just want to sleep!

For travelers out there: I recommend trying out Google Mobile’s flight status checker. Just text the airline and the flight number (e.g., ua 14). and you get back the flight’s time, status, and even gate number.
