Blogging it up at Yearly Kos

I’m at the Yearly Kos Convention in Chicago. It’s a gathering of about 1500-2000 people from “The Internet.” It’s interesting to see what the Internet looks like, and it’s also great to finally have real faces to put next to names of people whose writing I read every day. Also, I feel as though people on the Internet are more likely to have full-on facial hair than people in the real world.

I’m here with Becky Wasserman from my organization, American Rights at Work. Earlier today we facilitated a workshop about how to break through union stereotypes. We were joined by Nancy Scola and Maggie Nielsen, a nurse organizing at Resurrection Hospital here in the Windy City. Though the room wasn’t as full as I would have liked, we had a great discussion about what we need to do to connect workers’ rights to the progressive movement.

We have a table in the exhibition room, conventiently located between tables for Act Blue and Hillary Clinton. I say conveniently not because a small organization is between two high-trafficked tables, but because Hillary’s table is the source of many jokes and much amusement. For the majority of the first day, the table was empty. It took several hours after that to even staff the table. And after Hillary initially said she wasn’t attending the breakout session with conventioneers tomorrow, Hillary’s table now informs passers-by with a handwritten sign that she will, in fact, stop by for a portion of the event. (A group of videographers just pointed at the sign and laughed, and are now filming it for posterity.)

I am off to a few more events before I need to take a break and wind down so I don’t crash. And now I can say that I have, in fact, blogged at a blogger convention.
